Escarpment Chardonnay

This vintage is currently sold out.
Escarpment Chardonnay is grown on our Te Muna Road Vineyard with a small portion of grapes from growers in Martinborough. The first Chardonnay planted on Te Muna Road was Clone 95 in 1999.
Every vintage, we aim to produce a wine that is complex, fruit-driven with a mineral backbone and dry finish.
CURRENT VINTAGE: 2021 Escarpment Chardonnay
100% Martinborough fruit, from the famous alluvial terrace and made from grapes grown on our own estate along with select growers. 2021 was a small but exceptional vintage, with the resultant wine an accurate reflection of the district’s unique terroir.
The small crop, along with warm days and cool nights allowed for full ripeness, producing a powerful opulent wine with a flinty mineral backbone. This is enhanced by the texture created from fermentation in French oak puncheons. With 20% new, and in barrel for 11 months, before a further 4 months in stainless tank.
No malolactic fermentation means this wine has crisp natural acidity, which is balanced by a creamy mouthfeel. Complex fruit, with lifted citrus and gunflint allow it to match with most entrée dishes and seafood.
An accessible wine which can be enjoyed in its youth or allowed to age gracefully over a few years.
