This vintage is currently sold out.
Planted on the Martinborough Terrace alluvial gravels in 1989 by Graham and Gill Cleland. This 2ha site is one of the finest in the district. It consistently produces wines with a pure expression of the Martinborough style. Vine age, good shelter, and a blend of Clone 828, UCD Davis clones 5 and 6 merge into classic wines of great depth and character.
The hallmark of this vineyard is the savoury, earthy undertones combining with beautiful ripe black, red, and green fruit flavours which are always expressed in the resulting wine. These characters are consistent from year to year ensuring the Terroir is paramount in the bottle.
CURRENT VINTAGE: 2020 Kiwa Pinot Noir
This wine was grown on the Cleland Vineyard on Cambridge Road, Martinborough from 33 year old vines. A combination of deep alluvial gravels for which the Martinborough Terraces are renowned, and a blend of Clones UCD 5 and 6 always rewards us with a savoury, complex, spicy wine.
The fruit was destemmed to an open top fermented with the inclusion of some wholebunch. It was fermented using indigenous yeast and hand plunged just once a day for soft extraction, with a total vat time of 22 days. After pressing it was matured in 31% new French oak barriques for 16 months. Bottled without fining or filtration, promoting soft mouth feel and texture. The Kiwa block always gives us an elegant savoury wine, with bay loral and lifted spice. It will continue to develop for up to 15 years and will always be a wonderful counterpart to any game food.
