The Sprinkler Frost Protection System
Running sprinklers during a frost? While it seems counterintuitive, doing so actually protects young grapevine buds from frosts damage. Spring is one of the most critical times of the year for our vineyard team. One bad frost can wipe out an entire years' crop. At our Te Muna Road Vineyards, we have a sprinkler system over our close-planted Chardonnay.
So how does this system work? As the temperatures drop below zero, the sprinkler water turns to ice. Doing so releases latent heat energy. This continuous freezing and heat releasing process protects the buds from negative degree temperatures.
