ROLLER COASTER RIDE NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED
Yesterday I was somewhat moved by the words of Sir David Attenborough regarding the long term influence of global warming. If what’s going on here in Martinborough is anything to go by, we certainly are feeling the effects.
After a warm benign start to the season, we have experienced a devastating frost 7 weeks ago which has done some serious damage. This was at least a 1 in 20 year event.
In the last 3 weeks, like most of the country we have experienced weather closer to sub-tropical rather than 41°S. Warm wet weather has definitely helped the vines to recover which is at least the silver lining.
Escarpment continues to enjoy success especially in our all-important export markets. The US continues to grow (slowly), China as exciting as ever and Aussie quickly becoming our most lucrative market with Torbreck’s help. Our eminent sale to the Barossa Valley Shiraz specialist has meant they now distribute Escarpment in their part of the world. We are all waiting (very) patiently for the OIO to make the decision we all expect. Its only taken 8 months so far! They certainly are taking the role earnestly I’m able to report, which for some of us at least, is welcome. The UK has become a constant thorn due to Brexit. Who would have thought winemaking could be so political. It’s business as usual during this time and going forward.
We believe our new ownership will be a very successful complimentary partnership with Escarpment continuing to do what it does best which is to concentrate on cool climate Pinot Noir & Chardonnay.
With all this action our team (squad) are looking forward to some down time which will be very short the way the weather is dictating everything. Our new winemaker Tim Bourne has settled in well and looking forward to vintage. Another silver lining is that he will have plenty of time to think about some stunning 2019 wines with perhaps ½ the normal crop.
CHRISTMAS WINE PACK
To help celebrate the festive season, without a Santa, we have some exciting wines for your enjoyment, and to fill those advent calendars.
It’s all about bubbles for me at this time of the year and we have a great 2012 Blanc de Blanc for your enjoyment. Another stunning 2018 Pinot Noir Rose as well and our more complex styles of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Our Christmas Wine Pack includes 2 bottles Blanc de Blanc 2012, 2 bottles of Nina Rosé 2018, 2 bottles of Escarpment Pinot Noir 2016 all for the great price of $185 (including freight) which is $25 off our web site price. And to entice you even further our Escarpment Pinot Noir 2016 has just recently been reviewed by Neal Martin at “Vinous” with a score of 91/100 – “an earthy, damp woodland bouquet that combines neatly with the black plum and blackberry aromas.”
Otherwise see our purchase page for our order form to mix and match any of our wines on offer. We offer free freight for 6 or more bottles of wine.
Enjoy your break, we certainly will, and be back next year “with our ears back.”
