2013 Escarpment & Kupe Chardonnay

Last month we bottled the 2013 Escarpment Chardonnay and our 2013 Kupe single vineyard Chardonnay. We are very excited about these wines from the exceptional 2013 vintage they were both picked in March last year in perfect condition.

The 2013 Escarpment Chardonnay is from our Te Muna road vineyard, the fruit was hand picked and pressed directly to barrel without settling. It underwent un-inoculated barrel fermentation and was aged in barrel (15% new) for 11 months on its lees with occasional stirring, undergoing partial MLF. It was then blended in March this year and aged on light lees for 6 months prior to bottling.  The wine shows white stone fruit and citrus flavours along with a savoury creamy texture with bright acidity giving the wine complexity and length.

The 2013 Kupe Chardonnay is from a 0.4 ha vineyard on Princess Street in Martinborough. The fruit from this block always gives us a wine with great complexity and intensity. It was also hand picked and pressed directly to barrel without settling. It underwent un-inoculated barrel fermentation and was aged in barrel (40% new) for 11 months on its lees with occasional stirring, undergoing partial MLF. It was then blended in March this year and aged on light lees for 6 months prior to bottling. It shows great complexity with strong fruit flavours and savoury mineral drive to the palate. It is a wine with a Glenn McGrath like line and length.
